Close Encounters

Of the Amphibian kind As you’ve probably guessed by now, I love sitting out by my pond every day. The gentle gurgling of the fountain, the flashes of colour as the fish swim past, the bird calls in the yard around me. My tranquil oasis of peace and beauty where I recharge my battery and meditate on the wonders of God’s creation and all His blessings. Sometimes I get a surprise visitor to my oasis, at which point I shatter the peace and quiet by yelling at my longsuffering son, “Grab your camera and get out here!

Fair Weather Friends

The Early Bird As I was laying in bed one morning, listening to the raucous call of a blue jay, it occured to me that I am woken up by different birds most of the months of the year. We try to have the door to our balcony open as many nice nights as possible since we love the cool, fresh air. The downside is that my little birdie alarms always go off at sunrise or even slightly earlier!

Not Just Flowers My sister-in-law came for a visit recently and she commented on the decorations in the gardens around the pool. She thought they really added something to the look and feel of the garden. I agree. Most of the items I found at Berry Hill Ltd. which is a great little store in town here. Summertime We are now smack in the middle of summer. This one has been hot and dry here in SW Ontario. I’ve had to water the gardens most weeks and the planters every day. Some plants have already stopped blooming but most of them are in full swing now. The bees are busy and there are butterflies everywhere. The hummingbirds are also making their rounds of the gardens but are still visiting the nectar feeders regularly.

My Gardens I have a large city lot and it is full of gardens. When we bought this place the gardens were pretty basic. There is a lot of shade and part-shade in the gardens so the previous owners had lots of hosta lilies. Now, I like hostas but I mean that’s pretty much all they had! Very low maintenace gardening. I’m all for low maintenance but I want flowers too.

Nursery Pond

A Healthy Pond I’ve got a large pond in my backyard that I absolutely love. I spend some time every day sitting by my pond admiring the abundance of life. I will likely have several posts about my pond but today I’ll focus on the new life, the babies. In the spring we had a visit from a female green frog. She didn’t stay long but she left us about 100 eggs.
